This #matriarchmonday we have our eyes on a rising matriarch, Myia Antone. Myia is from Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), with Ukrainian and Norwegian roots. Growing up in Squamish, she explored and loved taking care of the land that her ancestors have occupied since time immemorial.
Myia is the founder of Indigenous Women Outdoors (IWO), a non-profit that supports Indigenous women in healing, connecting and training for careers out on the land. She is also a Wilderness First Responder and has led canoe and hiking trips for Indigenous youth around BC and down the Yukon river.
As the founder of IWO, she has succeeded in her goals of reconnecting local Squamish Nation women to their traditional territories. IWO started out as a hiking group on the North Shore and Squamish areas and Myia has turned it into so much more. Recently, Myia was the youngest winner ever of Tim Jones Community Achievement Award which shifts focus to a younger generation, to inspire everyone that making a change and contributing to society does not come with age, but with passion and tenacity.
Let's give Myia some props and the IGG crew is so grateful for the next iteration of leaders in our community.
