Valentina Blackhorse
In our #matriachmonday spotlight we honor our sister Valentina Blackhorse whose life was full of love for her people and culture. Valentina was among the Diné Nation’s youngest and most prominent pandemic victims. Valentina (Diné) was from Tuba City, Arizona and was a daughter, a sister, a granddaughter a mother, and “kind, loving, caring, ambitious, heartwarming…as well as silly” according to her sister.
Valentina was a former Miss Western Navajo, as well as Miss Monument Valley High School and Miss Diné College. She won those titles while starting a family and a career as a public servant. She was an advocate for her generation learning to speak their Diné language and promoted cultural teachings among youth. According to Vanielle, her sister, Valentina dreamed of entering politics one day, aspiring to become a delegate to the Navajo Nation Council or even president of the Navajo Nation.
As the Diné Nation is grappling with one of the deadliest outbreaks in history Valentina reminded family members to stay home, wash their hands, and wear masks. She lived with rheumatoid arthritis and was herself at greater risk. After her untimely death her family created masks in her honor reminding others of the importance of wearing them.
We too ask you to consider those with compromised immune systems and keep yourself and others safe by continuing to stay home. We honor this young warrior for her fight, and celebrate the 28 years she was on the Earth. Mask up and save a life for Valentina!
