Rebecca Nagle
Our #matriachmonday spotlight goes to Rebecca Nagle (Cherokee) who is a citizen of Cherokee Nation and a two spirit/queer woman. She is a community organizer and writer living in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and working on language revitalization, while also studying her Cherokee language.
Rebecca is focused on advancing Native rights and ending violence against Native women. She is the co-founder and co-director of FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture, which is a creative activist collaboration to upset the culture of rape and promote a culture of consent.
Rebecca is also the host of This Land, a podcast from Crooked Media, that provides an in depth look at the murder case that launched the investigation into the treaty rights of five tribes and half the land in Oklahoma.
In July 2020, the Supreme Court ruled that most of the Oklahoma’s eastern area falls within Muscogee (Creek) territory. This ruling honors a treaty from the mid-1800’s and gives the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee, and Seminole legal jurisdiction on their land.
From Rebecca:
It’s really important for people to realize that even when these things aren’t making headlines, all of the work that Indigenous people are doing in the court, in their communities, on the frontline, is still happening and it’s still worthy of people’s attention and concern.
